Ancient China Food

When Jordan and I were playing with her dollhouse this afternoon, she made the Mom ask the Daughter if she wanted a snack.  “Sure,” I made the little girl reply, “What kind of snack do we have?”  Jordan answered for the Mom, “Pizza – chicken pizza – with cotton candy and macaroni and cheese.  How would you like that?”  When I said that it sounded like kind of weird food, she quickly responded, “It’s ancient China food.”

Welcome back to Costa Rica!

We returned to Costa Rica on Thursday of last week and were welcomed by the customary, though heavier than normal, rains.  The photos below were taken on the way home from church within an hour of the start of the rains.  Notice that the moto's front tire (21" diameter!) is completely submerged as he tried to walk/ride it through the impromptu lake.

Whirlwind visit to the States

The month of August had us in the States for the last three weeks.  We were there to visit with 4 churches (see photo below) and various supporters as well as to welcome Meghan home from her summer in South Africa.  We had a whole 48 hours with her before taking her back to Chicago and helping her to get settled into her dorm room.  (Speaking of which, Henry got to carry a love seat up three flights of narrow stairs all by himself! )

The time was also spent "power wedding shopping" as we helped Meghan to find and book the venue for the wedding and reception, find a caterer, AND find "the dress" and all of the assorted goodies that go along with it!  We had to go back to Costa Rica to rest!!

Engaged!

That's right! Meghan came back from South Africa with an engagement ring and plans for a June 2011 wedding. She and Marius have been courting for 2 1/2 years, so this was not unexpected.  Still, knowing it's going to happen doesn't necessarily make it any easier.  The reality still hit pretty hard!

Tech Support

Sent to me by a friend.  Funny!

Five things you don't want to hear from Tech Support:
1. "Duuuuuude! Bummer!"
2. "In layman's terms, we call that the Hindenburg Effect."
3. "Your problem can be fixed, but you're going to need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape and a car battery."
4. "Press 1 for Support.
    Press 2 if you're with ‘60 minutes.'
Press 3 if you're with the FTC."
5. "Hold on a second, please ... Mom! Timmy's hitting me!"

When Grandma treated us to gelato during her visit in March, Jordan chose mint.  Can you tell?

encuentro day 2

The first day of our encuento went well. Eli and I had a five hour block to do some training on Moodle (our virtual learning environment) for our professors and course writers. This went extremely well based on the discussion and questions the training segments generated.

In this photo; Jeff is leading our devotional time on day two.

Excitement at the office today!

A few minutes ago, a ruckus was heard outside the office.  When we checked it out, we found a bus on fire almost right outside! Nothing major and no injuries.

Easter Celebration

Spent a wonderful morning with friend celebrating the resurrection. Of course, being good Christians, we had brunch after the service. The kids enjoyed the Easter egg hunt, running everywhere and shouting with each egg found.

Our Brave Little Girl

We took Jordan to the doctor for a blood test this morning. In spite of her extreme energy, (almost literally!) bouncing off the walls the entire time we were at the doctor's office, she sat very still for the phlebotomist and didn't even flinch while he was inserting the needle. Nor did she react at all negatively the entire time!! When we were leaving his office, he commented on how brave she was. I think even he was surprised at how well she did.

Jordan's in school!

Jordan started "Pre-Kinder," or "pre-school," on Monday, and she did great! She's in a bilingual pre-school that's just a 5 minute drive from our home. Like most schools in Latin America, this one requires a uniform and, as you can see, she loves it (though they had to give her a size 6 because she's so big - we can blame Papa). The school calls itself "bilingual," but the truth is that Jordan's teacher speaks very little English. That's exactly what we want! Jordan's also the only "gringa" in her class, so now she'll finally be forced to USE her Spanish. (Lately, she's developed the habit of answering everyone in English, regardless of the language they speak. She understands both; shouldn't they?)

That's what Lindsay got for a composite score on her SAT!! Beside being a great score, it totally blew away her expectations. Needless to say, we are extremely happy for, and proud, of her.

Sorry!

Although I've been meaning to upload some more photos from Christmas and our little bit of vacation time, I haven't.  Sorry about that. And...  I also realized a few minutes ago (how?, why?) that I hadn't uploaded the last few versions of our newsletter.  While I've corrected the latter issue (see the box on the right), I still haven't gotten you any fresh pictures.  I'll try to get that corrected.
